    Community Involvement

At Kindred Healthcare, our community involvement is consistent with our company’s principles and with our mission of customer service and quality care.

Through the Kindred Foundation, the company maximizes resources to support worthwhile community activities in three categories – healthcare-related charities, employee education and mission-related research – giving our nursing centers and hospitals the ability to participate at a higher level in non-profit organizations they already support in their communities across the United States.

We have focused our efforts on developing strong partnerships with three key healthcare-related, non-profit organizations that are closely aligned with our business – the American Lung Association, the American Heart Association and the Alzheimer’s Association.

These organizations have missions that are consistent with ours and through our involvement we can help them raise awareness about their important causes and aid these groups in funding research.

We have committed dollar-for-dollar matching funds for the hospitals that participate in the American Lung Association’s Asthma Walk and for the hospitals and nursing centers that take part in the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk. The company also provides funds to each hospital to sponsor their local Asthma and Heart Walks.

Since 2005, the company has been involved with the Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk on a national level. We are currently a Platinum National Team. We have also committed funds to each of our more than 225 nursing centers to become sponsors of their local Memory Walks. In 2005, 76% of our nursing centers participated in the Memory Walk at some level, raising nearly $400,000 for the Alzheimer’s Association. In 2006, 85% of our centers participated, raising more than $350,000 for the organization. In 2007, through sponsorships and fundraising, Kindred raised almost $500,000 for the Alzheimer's Association Memory Walks around the country, and in 2008, we increased our total to more than $670,000.

Kindred is committed to being a responsible corporate citizen in every community we serve. We will nurture partnerships with these organizations and continue to grow our involvement.
