Compared with an LTACH:

IRFs are designed for medically stable patients who can participate in intensive rehabilitation, typically at least three hours of therapy each day.

Care may include:

• Intensive physical, occupational and speech therapy
• Rehabilitation physician oversight
• Rehabilitation nursing care
• Therapy focused on improving mobility, function and independence

Compared with an LTACH:
IRFs primarily focus on intensive rehabilitation for medically stable patients. LTACHs provide continued hospital-level treatment for patients with complex medical needs while also providing rehabilitation as appropriate.
