At the beginning of his stay, Kyle was also having difficulty comprehending what was being said to him; but as he began to recover, his mental faculties improved and he became more engaged with his therapists. His first major success occurred when he was weaned from the vent, had the breathing tube removed and began speaking with his own voice. He then started to work more actively with his rehab team, and Kyle went from barely getting up from bed and into a wheelchair, to walking without assistance. Now independent with all the tasks of daily life, and able to breathe without any difficulties, Kyle was eager to return home and get back to a normal life.
