Who Benefits From
LTACH Care?

Patients recovering from a serious illness or injury may continue to require hospital-level care, specialized treatment and rehabilitation for an extended period of time. Kindred Hospitals provide long-term acute care for medically complex patients who need continued treatment through the next stage of recovery.

Our Clinical Liaisons can help determine if a long-term acute care hospital (LTACH) may be appropriate for your patient.

Is an LTACH Right for My Patient?

Patients who require extended recovery with daily physician intervention and frequent nursing may benefit from an LTACH.

Does your patient fit one of these clinical categories?

  • Ventilator-dependent with respiratory failure
  • Complex wound care with at least one acute comorbidity
  • Respiratory complexity with at least two acute comorbidities
  • Medical complexity with at least two acute comorbidities

If yes, consider the patient's coverage and benefits:

  • Patient has an LTACH benefit
  • Payer will consider a Single Case Agreement or Letter of Agreement
  • For Medicare, patient has 3 midnights in a billable ICU or at least 96 hours on a ventilator

A Kindred Clinical Liaison can help assess clinical needs, coverage and whether an LTACH may be appropriate.

When Surviving Critical Illness Is Only the Beginning

After a ruptured appendix led to septic shock, respiratory failure and kidney failure requiring dialysis, Ronnie Adams survived the immediate crisis but remained medically complex. He transitioned to Kindred Hospital for continued hospital-level care, including ventilator weaning and rehabilitation.

Over more than 100 days at Kindred, Ronnie progressed from complete dependence to breathing on his own and walking out of the hospital. Today, he has returned to his role as a security supervisor at Kindred Hospital.

Ronnie’s experience is one example of how an LTACH can help medically complex patients continue their recovery after critical illness.
