Annette's Recovery From ARDS and Septic Shock
When Annette arrived at Kindred Hospital, she required specialized care for her series of complex conditions. After working with her interdisciplinary care team, she was able to discharge to a Skilled Nursing Facility.

Annette developed shortness of breath, productive cough, weakness, and altered mental status.
AT ADMISSION
Annette was diagnosed with acute respiratory failure with hypoxia (low oxygen) secondary to Influenza A followed by pneumonia (lung infection) complicated by ARDS (severe lung inflammation) with fibrosis (lung scarring). She also had septic shock (dangerously low blood pressure from infection). All of this led to repeated intubations and extubations, as well as a tracheostomy.
TREATMENT AT KINDRED
At Kindred Hospital San Diego, Annette received daily physician care plus pulmonary, infectious disease, neurology, cardiology consults. She also received respiratory therapy and nutrition support as well as physical, occupational, and speech therapy.
OUTCOME
By recovery, Annette was decannulated (breathing tube removed) and eating by mouth. She was discharged to a skilled nursing facility. Annette is married, retired, and the mother of 3 children. She is motivated for the next step in her care journey.
