Charles' Success Story

Kindred Hospital Clear Lake patient Charles stands with his care team

After falling at home, Charles was diagnosed with bleeding in the brain and later developed respiratory failure.  He was transferred to Kindred for specialized cognitive rehabilitation and ventilator weaning.

Charles experienced a severe fall at home, resulting in a head injury. His family promptly called EMS, and he was quickly transported to a local hospital in Houston, TX. Upon arrival, he was diagnosed with a subdural hemorrhage. Unfortunately, his condition deteriorated, leading to respiratory failure, which required him to be placed on a ventilator for breathing support.

During his hospitalization, Charles faced significant cognitive challenges due to the location of his brain injury. He struggled to process simple commands, making mobility extremely difficult. After several weeks, once he was stable enough, the medical team decided to move Charles to Kindred Hospital Clear Lake for extended care. Kindred was chosen for its focus on ventilator weaning protocols and comprehensive rehabilitation programs, which were critical due to his prolonged bed rest.

At Kindred, the care team developed a personalized care plan tailored to Charles’s specific medical needs. The primary objective was ventilator weaning, as achieving this goal would significantly enhance his overall recovery. The multidisciplinary team collaborated closely, incorporating physical therapy, occupational therapy, and respiratory therapy into Charles’s rehabilitation.

Ventilator weaning was approached systematically, with the team using various techniques such as gradual reduction in ventilator support and frequent assessments of Charles’s respiratory status. This allowed the care team to carefully monitor his progress and make necessary adjustments. Additionally, they utilized specialized medical rehabilitation equipment like high-frequency oscillatory ventilation and sized tracheostomy tubes to ensure optimal respiratory support during the weaning process. In rehabilitation, Charles benefited from advanced medical equipment designed to enhance mobility and strength. Devices such as tilt tables, parallel bars, and gait trainers were employed to assist him in safely regaining his balance and mobility. The use of these tools helped him advance from bed mobility to standing and ultimately walking over 100 feet with a rolling walker, a significant milestone indicating improvement in both strength and mobility.

With the commitment and support from both the staff and Charles, he made remarkable progress throughout his stay. His dedicated participation in therapy sessions led to substantial enhancements in his cognitive function as well. Eventually, Charles was discharged to a lower level of care for continued rehabilitation and support, signifying a major milestone on his road to recovery. From the entire care team at Kindred, we wish Charles all the success.
