Charlotte's Success Story
Charlotte came to Kindred Hospital East New Jersey with a feeding tube, tracheostomy, and a vascular wound. Our wound are team addressed her injury while our speech therapy team helped her swallow independently. Ventilator weaning was challenging, particularly on dialysis days, but she was finally able to breathe independently again before discharging.
Charlotte was admitted to Kindred Hospital East New Jersey in critical condition. She arrived minimally conscious, dependent on full life support, and receiving nutrition through a feeding tube. At that time, she needed total assistance with even the smallest movements, such as rolling or turning in bed.
Despite these challenges, Charlotte began making progress through comprehensive rehabilitation. One of her first milestones was passing a swallow test, which allowed her feeding tube to be removed. She slowly built up her strength to breathe more on her own and was eventually able to sit up at the edge of her bed. With determination and encouragement from her care team, she progressed to transferring into a wheelchair.
Charlotte’s recovery extended beyond her respiratory progress. She was also admitted with a vascular wound on her left leg. With the combined efforts of the wound care team and Charlotte’s persistence, the wound was fully healed before her discharge.
Her respiratory journey was equally remarkable. Because of her extensive pulmonary history, ventilator weaning was especially difficult. The respiratory team worked closely with her through setbacks, including airway complications and the extra strain of dialysis days. After successfully spending 72 hours on a trach collar, she was able to move into the final stage of weaning.
By the time of her discharge to subacute rehab, Charlotte had made an incredible recovery. She regained independence in many daily activities, healed her wound, and overcame the challenges of respiratory failure. Her journey reflects not only her strength and determination but also the dedication of the entire care team that supported her every step of the way.
