Connieann sought care for a bowel blockage caused by a trapped abdominal hernia and a perforated viscus (hole in an internal organ). She had severe nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
AT ADMISSION
Connieann underwent hernia repair but developed persistent pain and lacked bowel function. Further surgery repaired her abdominal wall, removed dead tissue, and placed drains.
TREATMENT AT KINDRED
Connieann came to Kindred Hospital St. Louis South for care after her complicated hospitalization and multiple abdominal surgeries. She received specialized care for a reopened wound with tunneling (channels under the skin) and slough (dead tissue). The wound care team developed an individualized plan. Wound VAC therapy and nutrition promoted healing. Physical and occupational therapy restored strength and daily-living skills.
OUTCOME
After 43 days of treatment, Connieann transferred to a skilled nursing facility to continue healing, rebuild strength, and work toward independence.
