Deanna's Success Story

Kindred Hospital Brea patient Deanna poses with her care team

After experiencing respiratory failure, a heart attack, heart failure, and myasthenia gravis, Deanna was transferred to Kindred Hospital for respiratory care and rehabilitation before progressing to an acute rehabilitation facility.

A Patient Success Story from Kindred Hospital Brea

Before her hospitalization, Deanna lived an independent and active life. But that changed abruptly after a complex medical episode involving respiratory failure, a heart attack, heart failure, and myasthenia gravis, a condition causing sever muscle weakness. Deanna spent a month in the hospital where she received a pacemaker.  Finally, her care team recommended she transfer to Kindred Hospital Brea for specialized acute care and rehabilitation.

Upon arrival, had a tracheostomy tube and ventilator for breathing support, which made it difficult for her to eat normal food and unable to speak. Having spent so long in a bed, she had lost her ability to move on her own and could not walk.

Despite the obstacles, Deanna’s determination and the compassionate expertise of her care team helped her begin a steady path to recovery. She was gradually weaned from the ventilator and eventually decannulated. As her condition stabilized, she transitioned to an easy-to-chew diet and started regaining her strength.

With time and therapy, Deanna achieved meaningful milestones: she was able to walk up to 250 feet with a rolling walker and take four steps with just a hand supporting her. Her mobility, independence, and confidence grew with each passing day.

After making significant strides in her recovery, Deanna was safely discharged to an Acute Rehabilitation Unit (ARU), where she would continue her journey, one step closer to regaining her independence.

Deanna’s story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible through expert care, perseverance, and the support of a dedicated team.
