Eugene's Success Story
Eugene was shot in the abdomen, leaving him with multiple serious injuries. He came to Kindred Hospital for ventilator weaning, wound care, and physical therapy, and was able to discharge home and make a new beginning.
A Patient Success Story from Kindred Hospital Albuquerque
When Eugene arrived at Kindred Hospital Albuquerque, he had just survived a life-altering trauma. After sustaining a gunshot wound to the abdomen, he faced a long and uncertain road to recovery. His injuries were extensive and had become infected. He underwent several surgeries, required a chest tube, experienced respiratory failure, and needed mechanical ventilation. He was in critical condition and dependent on around-the-clock care, IV antibiotics, wound management, and tube feeding.
But Eugene came in with something even more powerful than medical intervention, hope and determination.
Upon admission, he was ventilator-dependent and had several wounds, including surgical and pressure injuries, that required specialized wound care. Yet from day one, Eugene made it clear he was ready to fight for his life and his future.
Eugene approached physical, occupational, and speech therapy with unmatched enthusiasm. He was eager to regain independence and often added a little dance move or shadowboxing gesture during therapy to keep things lighthearted. He worked hard to recover skills like getting out of bed, walking, and taking care of himself. In speech therapy, he relearned how to swallow safely and progressed to eating a regular diet.
By the time of discharge, Eugene was walking independently without any assistive devices. He had regained his independence and was breathing room air.
Now, Eugene is looking forward to two milestones that mark his new beginning—meeting his grandbaby and returning to his lifelong passion: cutting hair. His journey is a powerful reminder that with perseverance, skilled care, and a hopeful spirit, recovery is always possible.
