Fannie faced a series of major complications following dialysis treatment.
AT ADMISSION
After dialysis, Fannie developed altered mental status. She had a pressure ulcer extending to the bone and sepsis due to Group B streptococcal infection. Her hospitalization was complicated by respiratory failure requiring a tracheostomy and mechanical ventilation, atrial fibrillation, blood clots, and a low platelet count. She could not be weaned from the ventilator.
TREATMENT AT KINDRED
At Kindred Hospital Central Tampa, Fannie received respiratory therapy, including ventilator weaning, while also undergoing hemodialysis for her chronic kidney disease. She also received wound care and physical and occupational therapy. By discharge, Fannie was breathing without the ventilator on room air with 100% oxygen saturation.
OUTCOME
After 71 days of treatment, Fannie was discharged home, where her adult children provide care.
