Hospitalized after abdominal pain and a cough, Gaileen’s condition worsened drastically, requiring mechanical ventilation.
AT ADMISSION
Gaileen, who has Down syndrome and autism, was intubated but developed septic shock, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and drops in blood oxygen. She required medications to raise her blood pressure and relax her muscles, broader antibiotics, high ventilator support, a tracheostomy, and a feeding tube.
TREATMENT AT KINDRED
After transferring to Kindred Hospital Albuquerque, Gaileen received wound care, respiratory therapy, and nutrition support, as well as physical, occupational, and speech therapy. Staff built trust as sedation was reduced. She was weaned from the ventilator, decannulated, passed her swallow study, and began eating well.
OUTCOME
After 237 days of treatment, Gaileen was discharged home to her parents for continued care.
