Lesa is a care coordinator who loves to help people. She went to the ER with severe abdominal pain, and doctors discovered she had an esophageal stricture (a narrowing of the esophagus). Lesa was confused, hypoxic, and required intubation and mechanical ventilation. She received a tracheostomy and placed on IV antibiotics.
Lesa was transferred to Kindred Hospital Albuquerque for respiratory care and management of multiple medical comorbidities. Throughout a stay of over 50 days, Lesa received care from the respiratory team, the dietitian (because of her tube feeding), and doctors with lab monitoring. She also received IV antibiotics and physical, occupational, and speech therapy. She noted the kindness of many nurses and how many team members encouraged and inspired her while making her feel welcome. With the help of the team, she was weaned from her vent and able to breathe with the support of a BiPAP (Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure) machine. She also passed her swallow study, enabling her to have a pureed diet and thin liquids. In addition, Lesa improved to the point of walking with supervision.
Lesa was discharged to an acute inpatient rehabilitation facility to continue her journey back to good health and her normal life.

A wife, mother of five and grandmother of nine, Lesa joked that she’s eager to get back home and to start bossing everyone.
