Martin's Recovery from Stroke and Brain Injury

Kindred Hospital Rancho patient Martin poses with his care team.

When Martin arrived at Kindred Hospital, he required physical, occupational, and speech therapy. After working with his interdisciplinary care team, he was able to discharge to a skilled nursing facility.

A Patient Success Story from Kindred Hospital Rancho

Martin was admitted to intensive care after a right PICA stroke (a stroke affecting the back of the brain), which was complicated by brain swelling and fluid buildup. He required ventilator support and emergency brain surgery.

AT ADMISSION

Martin experienced stroke-related brain swelling, hydrocephalus (fluid buildup in the brain), and an irregular heartbeat. His hospitalization was complicated by prolonged mechanical ventilation, which required the placement of a tracheostomy. Dysphagia required the use of a feeding tube. Previously independent, Martin became dependent on others for all care.

TREATMENT AT KINDRED

At Kindred Hospital Rancho, Martin participated in physical, occupational, and speech therapy. During his stay, he progressed to taking four steps with a front-wheeled walker and propelling his wheelchair 50 feet. He was decannulated, cleared for a liquid diet, and able to communicate effectively.

OUTCOME

After 26 days, Martin was discharged to a skilled nursing facility.
