AT ADMISSION
While ill, Mary developed severe respiratory distress, respiratory acidosis (too much acid from poor breathing), and altered mental status. She required intubation and mechanical ventilation. She developed severe weakness and confusion and was dependent on others for daily tasks.
TREATMENT AT KINDRED
After transferring to Kindred Hospital El Paso, Mary made strong gains across physical, occupational, and speech therapy. She imporved from bed-level mobility and extensive assistance to minimum assistance with transfers, walking, and daily activities. Her swallowing also improved from modified foods and thickened liquids to a regular diet with thin liquids.
OUTCOME
After 30 days, mary was discharged to acute inpatient rehabilitation to continue intensive therapy building on the success acheived at Kindred El Paso.
