Miguel was hospitalized with hypercapnic respiratory failure (dangerous carbon dioxide buildup) and diabetic ketoacidosis (life-threatening blood acidity from diabetes).
AT ADMISSION
Miguel developed acute pulmonary edema, septic shock, bacteremia (bloodstream infection), and acute kidney injury requiring dialysis. At the hospital, his condition initially worsened, requiring ventilation and treatment for cellulitis (skin infection) and a draining ulcer. His kidney function later stabilized.

He initially required total assistance for most tasks and became easily short of breath. He had developed leg neuropathy (nerve damage) and a left foot drop (difficulty lifting the foot). He was eager to improve and worked hard.
OUTCOME
Oxygen needs decreased to room air most of the time. Physical and occupational therapy, along with a leg brace, helped him progress to walking 50 feet with a walker and completing more self-care. After 21 days of treatment, Miguel was discharged to an acute inpatient rehabilitation facility.
