After becoming increasingly weak at home, Sabira suffered respiratory failure.
AT ADMISSION
Sabira was admitted with acute hypoxic respiratory failure secondary to pneumonia and pleural effusion. She was ventilator-dependent and required a tracheostomy. She also faced the complexities of end-stage renal disease and severe volume overload.
TREATMENT AT KINDRED
Sabira arrived intubated, severely malnourished, and dependent on continuous dialysis and a feeding tube. At Kindred Hospital Sugar Land, she received respiratory, pulmonary, dietary, physical, occupational, and speech therapy. She was weaned from the ventilator, her feeding tube was removed, and her anemia, thrombocytopenia, wounds, infection, and hemoglobin levels improved.
OUTCOME
After 13 days of treatment, Sabira was discharged home with her husband, who had been unwaveringly present and supportive. She had progressed from ventilator dependence to breathing room air independently, eating a regular diet, and being mobile.
