Samuel's Recovery from Complex Wounds

When Samuel arrived at Kindred Hospital, he had a bed sore and deep tissue wounds. After working with his interdisciplinary care team, he was able to discharge to a congregate living facility.

A Patient Success Story from Kindred Hospital Ontario

Samuel had multiple medical problems that included chronic kidney disease, functional quadriplegia, COPD, congestive heart failure, and schizophrenia. He had been receiving care in a nursing facility before he was admitted to a hospital with weakness, and was found to have a severe bed sore on his right buttock and a deep tissue wound on his left buttock that was complicated with osteomyelitis (infection of the bone).

Upon admittance to Kindred Hospital Ontario, Samuel was started on six weeks of IV antibiotics for his wounds. He continued to receive respiratory and dialysis support and was under the care of the wound care team. Samuel was placed on a low-air-loss mattress, provided with offloading devices, and received dressing changes every three days. Close collaboration with the dietary department ensured that he received adequate nutrition for wound healing. After the course of his antibiotic therapy and four months of wound care treatments, all of his wounds were healed. Samuel was able to work with the physical therapy team to improve his bed mobility and ability to transfer to and from his wheelchair. Samuel was eventually discharged to a congregate living facility.

“I give 5 stars. Everyone is happy. I greatly appreciate all that wound care has done for me.”

Samuel reads a lot and looks forward to going home to his mother and his pet chihuahua.
