Victor's Story of Recovery from Sepsis and Septic Shock

When Victor arrived at Kindred Hospital, he was reliant on a ventilator and unresponsive. After working with his interdisciplinary care team, he was able to discharge to home.

A Patient Success Story from Kindred Hospital North Florida

Victor lived a fully independent and active life that included spending time with his children and grandchildren, gardening and fishing. He began to feel ill while working in his garden. He was taken to a local emergency department and found to have acute altered mental status and fever. He was transferred to another hospital, where he was diagnosed with sepsis and septic shock secondary to fungal pneumonia as well as MRSA bacteremia, acute respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation, metabolic encephalopathy, and acute kidney injury. In addition to the ventilator, he required dialysis, PEG placement, and many rounds of IV antibiotics.

Upon arrival at Kindred Hospital North Florida, Victor was minimally responsive, unable to participate in his care, unable to eat, and unable to sit or stand on his own. Through medication changes by his attending physician and infectious disease physicians, his mentation slowly began to improve. Nurses, respiratory therapists, a pulmonologist, the infectious disease team, a nephrologist, a dietitian, and physical, occupational, and speech therapists all worked with Victor throughout his 34-day stay.

“Thank you to all the staff at Kindred for your kindness, knowledge and care. Thank you for helping me get back home to my family!”

Victor was able to discharge and return home, looking forward soon to being back at the lake fishing with his friends and grandchildren.
