Andrew's Recovery from Respiratory Failure
When Andrew arrived at Kindred Hospital, he required mechanical ventilation. After working with his interdisciplinary care team, he was able to discharge to an acute inpatient rehabilitation facility.
A Patient Success Story from Kindred Hospital Northland
Andrew was intubated after hypoventilation syndrome (shallow breathing) progressed to respiratory failure. He also had serious heart conditions.
AT ADMISSION
Andrew’s respiratory failure was complicated by sepsis, acute heart failure, kidney injury, and fluid around the heart. Andrew required a ventilator, tracheostomy, and feeding tube. The hospital performed a right heart catheterization and found high biventricular pressures and pulmonary hypertension.
TREATMENT AT KINDRED
At Kindred Hospital Northland, Andrew was weaned from the ventilator and decannulated. Shortness of breath made therapy difficult, and physiatry was consulted. Physical, occupational, and speech therapy helped him sit, walk short distances with a walker, and resume eating.
OUTCOME
After 34 days, Andrew transferred to an acute inpatient rehabilitation facility, continuing toward his goal of returning home with his mother.
“You all have been great getting me on the mend. I have been blessed in so many ways. Andy and Jordan are the best!”
