SAN ANTONIO, Texas, (March 26, 2026) – Throughout March, Kindred Hospital San Antonio joins healthcare facilities, organizations, and individuals around the country in observing Brain Injury Awareness Month as a time to increase discussion and understanding of the impact of traumatic brain injuries on communities.

Kindred Hospital San Antonio, which provides specialized long-term acute care and rehabilitation to medically complex patients, on Thursday hosted members of the San Antonio and Bexar County healthcare community for a Brain Injury Awareness Month informational session and facility tour, highlighting the important role specialty hospitals like Kindred can play in recovery.

More than 144,000 traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are diagnosed in Texas each year. Common causes of TBIs are falls, vehicle accidents, sports-related injuries, and military combat injuries. Thousands of additional brain injuries are tied to strokes, hypoxia (lack of oxygen to the brain) and non-traumatic events.

A 59-bed facility located at 3636 Medical Drive in the Medical District, Kindred Hospital San Antonio is the city’s only long-term acute care hospital (LTACH) to be certified in Brain Injury Rehabilitation by Joint Commission. Kindred routinely treats patients who are facing lengthy recoveries from TBIs and other brain injuries, including patients coming directly from the ICU of traditional acute care hospitals.

“Kindred Hospital San Antonio is proud to provide high-quality, compassionate care to members of our community who have suffered traumatic brain injuries, strokes and other debilitating brain injuries,” said Olulana Bamiro, Market CEO of Kindred Hospitals of San Antonio. “We have an expert team of caregivers who are dedicated to helping our patients regain independence and reintegrate into their communities, and every day we see amazing recoveries take place in our facility. We are honored to take part in Brain Injury Awareness Month, to elevate the courageous stories of brain injury survivors, and to help our community know more about the capabilities of long-term acute care hospitals in supporting brain injury patients with complex medical needs.”

Brain injury patients at Kindred receive specialized care and rehab services delivered by an interdisciplinary team that includes neurologists, physiatrists, nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech-language pathologists. Kindred, which is also Joint Commission-certified in the care of Respiratory Failure, is particularly well-equipped to treat brain injury patients who require ventilators to breathe, helping them wean from the vent and breathe on their own again.

Kindred’s PTs and OTs help patients improve their strength, balance, mobility, coordination and ability to perform activities of daily living. Speech therapists help patients regain their ability to communicate and swallow.

Since Kindred Hospital San Antonio earned Brain Injury Rehabilitation certification, more than 70 brain injury patients, including many who faced life-threatening complications, have graduated from the BIR program and achieved remarkable progress in their recovery.
