Lester was first admitted to an acute care hospital with sepsis and acute hypoxemic hypercapnic respiratory failure, along with a Staphylococcus epidermidis infection. His condition required intubation, and he was later transferred to Kindred Hospital Albuquerque for ventilator management, tracheostomy care, IV antibiotics, and hemodialysis. Shannon, a mother with a history of diabetes and heart problems, recently went to the emergency room with shortness of breath and an unusually fast heartbeat. Doctors discovered that she had a large blood clot in her lungs that likely developed after recent airline travel. The clot made it hard for her to breathe and damaged her lung. Her condition worsened, and she had to be placed on a ventilator and given a tracheostomy. She also developed an infection and low blood pressure, which required medications. Alisha went to a hospital with nausea and vomiting. Sepsis concerns arose due to an ischemic esophagus, a rare, life-threatening condition where the esophagus suffers from severely reduced blood flow. Her condition deteriorated due to acute respiratory failure and severe pneumonia. She required intubation and mechanical ventilation, a vasopressive drip to maintain her blood pressure, and IV antibiotics to treat the pneumonia. Adam had experienced cardiac arrest and had to be resuscitated. He suffered from life-threatening diabetic ketoacidosis and multiple other concerns, including recurring seizures, acute hypoxic respiratory failure, septic shock, aspiration pneumonia, and acute kidney injury. His family was told to “say goodbye” and that he had about a 5% chance of survival.
