Christian's Story of Vent Liberation and Rehab
When Christian arrived at Kindred Hospital, he required full ventilator support and had several pressure wounds. After working with this interdisciplinary care team, he was able to discharge to an Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility.
A Patient Success Story from Kindred Hospital East New Jersey
Christian was admitted to Kindred Hospital East New Jersey in an overall fragile medical status with a complex medical history. He was on full ventilator support and arrived with four pressure wounds. He had vital signs that were unstable, and there were many days when he couldn’t participate in physical, occupational, or speech therapy.
Fortunately, his condition stabilized, and he was able to make tremendous progress. The respiratory therapy staff monitored his trach collar trials. With continued coaching and redirection, Christian was able to have his trach capped and breathe naturally through his mouth and nose. His Patient Care Assistant, Tina, always encouraged and motivated him to keep improving.
“Thank you to everyone in every department for getting me here.”
Christian was weaned off the ventilator and began to speak using a speaking valve. He regained the ability to swallow regular solids and thin liquids. His overall mental function and cognition improved to where he became oriented and engaged in conversations. After debridement, his wounds healed. Christian regained his strength and endurance, and was able to walk laps in the hallway using a walker. He became more independent with everyday activities, such as daily hygiene and dressing. Eventually, Christian was able to discharge to an acute rehabilitation unit to continue his progress.
