Karen's Story of Recovery From Respiratory Failure

When Karen arrived at Kindred Hospital, she was dependent on a ventilator. After working with her interdisciplinary care team, she was able to discharge to home.

A Patient Success Story from Kindred Hospital Albuquerque

Karen, a vibrant fifth-grade teacher who inspires her students in math, science, and Spanish, is known for her love of learning and playful energy - which often has her playing ball with her students. Outside of school, she is a devoted wife, loving mother to one daughter, and an active member of her community.

Karen experienced severe abdominal pain and went to a hospital where doctors discovered a large obstruction caused by a sigmoid tumor. She underwent surgery and was transferred to the ICU, where she required ventilator support and faced multiple medical complications.

With tears in her eyes, Karen shared that when she first woke up, she heard the doctors say they hadn’t expected her to make it, “but somehow I’m still here, stronger than ever.”

When Karen arrived at Kindred Hospital Albuquerque, she required respiratory rehabilitation, wound care, and physical therapy to regain her strength and independence. Through her perseverance, her positive spirit, and the dedicated care of her medical team, Karen made tremendous progress.  Her determination never wavered. Each day, she worked hard to reach new milestones, celebrating every small victory.

Karen went home after being discharged, looking forward to returning to the classroom and ready to inspire her students once again with her resilience and love for life.
