Larry's Success Story

Kindred Hospital Ocala Patient Larry poses with his care team

Larry was hospitalized due to a cardiac arrest and complications led to him requiring a ventilator to breathe.  He was transferred to Kindred Hospital Ocala for ventilator weaning and was discharged to an acute rehabilitation unit to continue his recovery.

Larry, 55, was initially hospitalized for cardiac arrest. Due to a complicated hospital course, he required a tracheostomy and mechanical ventilation. Once stabilized, Larry was transferred to Kindred Hospital Ocala for the continuation of his care.

Upon admission, Larry required dependent assistance of two team members for all aspects of self-care and mobility for safety. He was evaluated by our respiratory team, consisting of physicians, pulmonologists, and respiratory therapists. He was decannulated and weaned down to 2 liters of oxygen. Physical, occupational and speech therapy evaluated Larry and began addressing his functional deficits in mobility, self-care, speech, and swallowing. Larry was motivated and worked diligently in all of his therapies. He was eager to move and began to improve his strength, mobility, and ability to communicate.

Prior to Larry’s discharge to an inpatient rehabilitation facility, he could complete all his daily activities with moderate assistance and could walk with the assistance of a walker. He was also able to speak and hold conversations again. Congratulations Larry, you are a true Kindred success!

Care for Complex Conditions

Patients come to our hospitals with serious conditions such as respiratory failure, complex wounds, sepsis, stroke, congestive heart failure, or even a combination of these. Their diagnoses are often complicated by existing health problems like diabetes or COPD. Many of our patients require treatments such as mechanical ventilators, dialysis, or IV therapy.
