Robert's Story of Rehab after Cardiac, Respiratory Arrest
When Robert arrived at Kindred Hospital, he received occupational therapy, and physical therapy. After working with his interdisciplinary care team, he was able to discharge to home.
A Patient Success Story from Kindred Hospital Rancho
Robert had a history of chronic hypoxic respiratory failure and chronic heart failure. He went to a short-term acute care hospital due to shortness of breath and low levels of oxygen in his blood. He underwent a paracentesis to drain fluid and relieve pressure on his lungs. Robert had a rapid response called for agonal breathing and concern about loss of pulse. He went into respiratory arrest, which prompted intubation. Subsequently, he experienced a cardiac arrest, where return of spontaneous circulation was obtained after a short round of CPR. Robert remained intubated and on a ventilator for many days, then was extubated. Tests revealed a serious infection of his aortic valve called endocarditis. Robert transferred to Kindred Hospital Rancho for continuation of care.
At Kindred Rancho, Robert received occupational therapy and physical therapy. Through the dedication of the rehabilitation and nursing team, Robert made significant strides in his therapy. After previously needing assistance, he completed upper- and lower-body dressing, grooming with independence, and modified independence in toileting tasks. He was able to sit at the edge of the bed and keep his balance and move in bed. He regained the ability to walk with rest breaks in between with modified independence.
Robert has since been discharged home.
