Gada's Recovery from a TBI Following a Car Accident

When Gada arrived at Kindred Hospital, she required high levels of wound care and multiple complications following a car wreck. After working with her interdisciplinary care team, she was able to discharge to Home with Home Health.

A Patient Success Story from Kindred Hospital Santa Ana

Only 21 years old, Gada was taken to Inland Valley Regional Medical Center following a serious motor vehicle accident. When she arrived at the emergency department, she was extremely confused. Doctors found that she had multiple injuries, including a traumatic brain injury (TBI), rib fractures, a collapsed lung requiring chest tube placement, brain bleeding and nerve fiber damage, a bruised lung, an L5 compression (spine) fracture, and a pelvic fracture. She required intubation for airway protection and later underwent tracheostomy and PEG (feeding tube) placement. After being weaned off the ventilator, Gada was transferred to Kindred Hospital Santa Ana.

Gada arrived at Kindred with multiple wounds that were treated by the wound care team. She received care in the ICU on a T-bar to help transition her off her breathing tube. She was started on capping trials, which she tolerated well, and her trach was removed after confirming stable blood gas results.

On her initial physical and occupational therapy evaluation, Gada could only track with her eyes and was not oriented. Speech therapy found that Gada could tolerate a PassyMuir (speaking) valve, but was unable to make voice sounds or articulate to cues, and was inconsistent in following simple directions. Coupled with her feeding status – which remained NPO (“nothing by mouth”) – Gada required language and swallowing therapy.

She was placed on an early mobility program, and after six days, a re-evaluation showed remarkable progress – she was alert, able to follow simple commands, and had advanced from total assistance in mobility to walking 250 feet with hand-over-hand assistance.

With her consistent progress and physician clearance, a safe discharge plan was arranged, including home health services, rehabilitation, and necessary medical supplies.

All wounds had fully healed by the time of discharge. She had improved from NPO to tolerating a soft, bite-sized diet. Gada also demonstrated greatly improved mental status and was able to communicate in meaningful sentences. As shown in the photo above, Gada (center, right, in black shirt) and her mother (center, left) returned to Kindred to thank our CCO, Gemma (far left), nurse practitioner Rob (far right) and the staff for helping her achieve her recovery goals.
