Robert's Recovery from Multiple Traumatic Injuries After A Car Crash
When Robert arrived at Kindred Hospital, he was reliant on a ventilator and in need of physical, occupational, and speech therapy. After working with his interdisciplinary care team, he was able to discharge to an Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility.
A Patient Success Story from Kindred Hospital St. Louis South
Robert was in a head-on collision at highway speeds and suffered multiple traumatic injuries, including fractures of the C2 vertebra (in his neck), multiple ribs, sternum, and femur and multiple lacerations. He subsequently developed acute respiratory failure that required intubation and mechanical ventilation. The hospital was able to wean him from mechanical ventilation, but he still required oxygen and airway management.
To continue making progress, Robert was sent to Kindred Hospital St. Louis South, beginning a 45-day stay that led to significant improvements. Ten days after he arrived, he was able was able to be off oxygen and have his tracheostomy capped. On day 11, his tracheostomy was removed, and he was able to remain on room air.
Robert continued to make progress with physical, occupational, and speech therapy despite some vocal cord paralysis. Kindred was able to get an ENT consult and made plans for a procedure to help his vocal cords, which made a marked improvement in his voice.
Robert was discharged to an acute rehabilitation facility that specializes in spinal injuries. He felt very motivated to get intense therapy daily and regain his independence.
