Adelaida's Story of Recovery From Respiratory Failure
When Adelaida arrived at Kindred Hospital, she required 24-hour respiratory therapy, and physical, occupational and speech therapy. After working with her interdisciplinary care team, she was able to discharge to home.
A Patient Success Story from Kindred Hospital North Florida
Respiratory failure and severe weakness threatened Adelaida’s independence.
AT ADMISSION
Adelaida, 76, came to Kindred Hospital North Florida after a long hospitalization for acute hypercapnic respiratory failure that required a tracheostomy and ventilator support. She had myasthenia gravis (muscle-weakening nerve disorder), dermatomyositis overlap syndrome (immune-related muscle inflammation), along with trouble swallowing and ICUacquired weakness.
TREATMENT AT KINDRED
At Kindred, Adelaida received 24-hour respiratory therapy, and physical, occupational, and speech therapy, overseen daily by physicians, including pulmonologists and neurologists. She tolerated tracheostomy capping trials and was successfully decannulated. In addition, PT, OT and speech therapy helped her build strength and improve swallowing.
OUTCOME
By discharge, Adelaida was breathing on her own without a tracheostomy, eating a regular oral diet, walking without a walker or cane, and completing transfers independently. She returned home with her family, ready to resume daily life and continue enjoying time with loved ones.
