Gary's Recovery From Cardiac Arrest

Kindred Hospital Aurora patient Gary poses with his care team

When Gary arrived at Kindred Hospital, he required mechanical ventilation and feeding tubes. After working with his interdisciplinary care team, he was able to discharge to home with home health.

A Patient Success Story from Kindred Hospital Aurora

Gary experienced cardiac arrest, likely caused by lack of oxygen, then went on a ventilator.

AT ADMISSION

Gary required prolonged mechanical ventilation. His time in the hospital was complicated by acute kidney injury, liver shock, and atrial fibrillation with a fast, irregular heartbeat. A possible blood clot in his left ventricle was also identified. After unsuccessful ventilator weaning attempts, he received a tracheostomy, feeding tube, blood-thinning treatment, and heart medication before transferring to Kindred Hospital Aurora.

TREATMENT AT KINDRED

At Kindred, Gary received pulmonary, respiratory, speech, nursing, rehabilitation, and nutrition care. He was weaned from the ventilator, had his tracheostomy and feeding tubes removed, and returned to eating normally. Antibiotics treated sepsis linked to a urinary tract infection and pneumonia, and he returned to his baseline oxygen needs.

OUTCOME

After 85 days of treatment, Gary was discharged to return home with home health services.
