Judith's Success Story
After a fall at home led to a brain bleed and respiratory failure, Judith was transferred to Kindred Hospitals for ventilator weaning, feeding tube removal, and therapy. By the time of discharge to Kindred's acute rehabilitation unit, she could talk, eat, and breath on her own. She had also made strides in mobility and was ready to take the next steps in her rehabilitation.
After falling down at home, Judith was diagnosed with bleeding in the brain requiring immediate surgery. She was also diagnosed with respiratory failure requiring her to have a feeding tube and a ventilator to provide breathing support. Once her condition had stabilized, she was transferred to Kindred Hospital The Palm Beaches for specialized acute care and rehabilitation.
At Kindred, Judith’s interdisciplinary care team immediately started working on her lung strength. With the help of a respiratory therapist, Judith began increasing her lung capacity and endurance.
As she worked toward ventilator weaning, she increasingly participated in physical and occupational therapy. When she arrived, she could not even move on her own in the bed, much less take care of herself. But she showed up to each therapy session with determination and a joyful spirit which helped her advance to standing and transferring to a chair with help.
Working with a speech therapist also helped her reclaim her voice and begin eating and drinking by mouth again. Achieving these milestones gave her the momentum she needed to reach the final goal of ventilator weaning. By the time Judith discharged to Kindred’s Acute Rehabilitation Unit, she had regained her breathing and eating independence and was ready to take the next steps in her rehabilitation journey.
