Steve's Recovery from Respiratory Failure after Seizure Episode
When Steve arrived at Kindred Hospital, he was experiencing multiple medical issues. After working with this interdisciplinary care team, he was able to discharge to an Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility.
A Patient Success Story from Kindred Hospital Bay Area St. Petersburg
Steve gets together with his friends and plays dominoes several times a week at a Domino Club. During one of these games, he began having seizures and became unresponsive. Paramedics were called.
At a local hospital, he was found to have multiple acute infarcts (damaged tissue) of his brain. He also had a full cardiac workup, including a cardiac catheterization and an echo. He was started on antiseizure medications and followed closely by neurology. He was intubated and placed on mechanical ventilation. He ended up receiving a tracheostomy tube and PEG (feeding) tube.
Steve was then admitted to Kindred Hospital Bay Area – St. Petersburg, where he received help from the cardiology, neurology, pulmonology, gastroenterology, and infectious disease teams. He also received occupational, speech, and physical therapy. Steve’s mental status improved over the course of his hospitalization. Before his hospitalization, Steve worked as a DJ for clubs and special events on nights and weekends. As he improved, he could be found with his headphones on, listening to music and waving to greet people.
Throughout his hospitalization, Steve was supported by his wife and their three children, his mother, siblings, and several in-laws. With their support and the support of multiple teams at Kindred, he was able to wean off the ventilator and has been discharged to acute inpatient rehabilitation.
