Douglas, an avid world traveler, had his life turned upside down after suffering a tragic motor vehicle accident that left him paraplegic.  After developing a chronic wound infection at the site of his injury, he underwent a sacral ulcer incision, debridement, and a flap closure procedure. Following the surgery, he was transferred to Kindred Hospital for specialized acute care.

For six weeks, our dedicated wound care team ensured his sacral muscle flap healed properly while minimizing the risk of infection.  Our wound care team frequently repositioned him so he would not acquire any new injuries.  He also received IV antibiotics and regular evaluations for the development of infection.

Initially, Douglas required supervision for bed mobility and assistance for upper body dressing and self-care.  Once his wound had healed, he was cleared for physical and occupational therapy, where he made excellent progress.  He gradually gained mobility and the ability to accomplish self-care tasks and mastered sliding board transfers to his wheelchair.

He was successfully discharged from Kindred Hospital to an Acute Rehabilitation Unit to continue his recovery process and get back to what he loves to do the most, travel.

Care for Complex Conditions

Patients come to our hospitals with serious conditions such as respiratory failure, complex wounds, sepsis, stroke, congestive heart failure, or even a combination of these. Their diagnoses are often complicated by existing health problems like diabetes or COPD. Many of our patients require treatments such as mechanical ventilators, dialysis, or IV therapy.
