Irene's Success Story

Kindred Hospital San Antonio Central patient Irene stands with her care team

After a complicated hospital stay due to a bowel obstruction, Irene required mechanical ventilation for breathing support. At Kindred Hospitals, Irene regained her breathing independence and improved her strength, mobility, and communication before transitioning to a lower level of care.

Irene, an active community member and devoted family member, was admitted to the local emergency room due to severe abdominal pain, accompanied by nausea and vomiting. After diligent observation and a series of medical tests, she was diagnosed with a bowel obstruction and required emergency surgery.

During the surgical procedure, Irene encountered several medical setbacks that necessitated her placement on a ventilator to support her breathing. The weeks that followed her surgery were critical, as she remained in the hospital, making slow yet steady progress toward recovery. Recognizing the need for extended care, the medical team decided to transfer Irene to Kindred Hospital San Antonio Central. Here, the primary goal was to facilitate ventilator weaning and rehabilitation. A detailed assessment of her medical condition allowed the interdisciplinary team to craft a personalized care plan aimed at liberating her from the ventilator, which was essential for her recovery and return to her normal life.

At Kindred, the ventilator weaning process began with careful monitoring and gradual reduction of ventilator support. The team used a systematic approach that included evaluating Irene's respiratory strength, adjusting the ventilator settings, and engaging her in activities to enhance her lung capacity. As she exhibited ability and readiness, Irene progressed from assisted breathing to spontaneous breathing trials. Eventually, she was successfully decannulated, demonstrating her capability to breathe independently. During her time at Kindred, Irene also underwent an intensive rehabilitation regimen involving physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy. These therapies focused on improving her strength and mobility, enhancing her ability to perform essential daily tasks, and providing support for any communication or swallowing difficulties.

Throughout her recovery, Irene received tailored nutritional support to enhance her overall health and facilitate healing. The dietary team worked closely with her to develop a meal plan that met her specific needs, which played a crucial role in her recovery process.

Irene's dedication to her rehabilitation journey was evident. Over time, she successfully passed all care plan goals, demonstrating significant improvements in her respiratory function and overall physical condition. With a strong support system and the skills she gained during therapy, she was able to transition to a lower level of care, ready to reintegrate into her community and family life. The care team at Kindred would like to wish her all the success in her recovery.

Care for Complex Conditions

Patients come to our hospitals with serious conditions such as respiratory failure, complex wounds, sepsis, stroke, congestive heart failure, or even a combination of these. Their diagnoses are often complicated by existing health problems like diabetes or COPD. Many of our patients require treatments such as mechanical ventilators, dialysis, or IV therapy.
