Martha's Success Story

Kindred Hospital San Antonio Central patient Martha stands with her caregiver

Experiencing complications following surgery, Martha was transferred to Kindred Hospital for advanced wound care.  She required IV antibiotics and pain management, as well as advanced wound care techniques.  After advancing in recovery and rehabilitation, Martha was discharged home with home health.

Martha's journey to recovery began with a severe episode of stomach pain that led to her admission at a local hospital in the San Antonio area. Here, she was diagnosed with a ventral incisional hernia repair and an ileostomy takedown, but her condition quickly escalated when an emergent reopening of the laparotomy was necessary. The surgical intervention was complex, involving skin debridement followed by partial skin closure using a vacuum-assisted closure (VAC) device to promote healing.

After spending several weeks in the local hospital, Martha's care team recognized that she required more extensive support for her recovery process. She was transferred to Kindred Hospital San Antonio Central, where her care shifted towards a multidisciplinary approach tailored to her unique needs. This phase of care included not only comprehensive pain management but also the administration of intravenous antibiotics to help control any potential infections stemming from her surgical site.

Wound care became a crucial component of Martha's treatment plan. The interdisciplinary team, which included skilled nurses, wound care specialists, and rehabilitation therapists, worked together to address the complexities of her healing process. With the use of advanced wound care techniques and diligent monitoring, they aimed not only to foster recovery but also to educate Martha about her condition and self-care practices.

As her physical well-being improved, Martha also engaged in rehabilitation services designed to strengthen her body and enhance her overall functionality. The rehab team focused on exercises that supported her mobility and stamina, laying the groundwork for her eventual return home. Martha was dedicated to her therapy sessions, demonstrating resilience and a positive attitude that significantly contributed to her progress.

Throughout her stay at Kindred Hospital, Martha worked closely with her care team, which regularly reviewed her progress and adjusted the care plan as necessary. Thanks to her determination and the collaborative effort of the healthcare professionals, she made substantial strides in her recovery. By the time the team reconvened to discuss her discharge, she had not only met but exceeded the goals outlined in her care plan. In the end, Martha successfully discharged with home health services, equipped with the knowledge and skills needed for her ongoing recovery. The entire care team extends their heartfelt wishes for a successful and smooth recovery.

Their diagnoses are often complicated by existing health problems like diabetes or COPD. Many of our patients require treatments such as mechanical ventilators, dialysis, or IV therapy.
