Nelson’s Recovery from Respiratory Failure

Nelson recovered from respiratory failure, requiring ventilator support and a tracheostomy, after severe stomach pain and bleeding esophageal varices.

A Patient Success Story from Kindred Hospital Chicago – North

When Nelson arrived at Kindred Hospital Chicago North, he required total assistance for every aspect of mobility and self-care. Through specialized respiratory care and rehabilitation, he worked his way back to independence.

AT ADMISSION

After several days of severe stomach pain, Nelson sought emergency treatment for bleeding veins in his esophagus. His condition required urgent procedures and led to respiratory failure requiring a ventilator. He later received a tracheostomy and feeding tube, and attempts to wean him from the ventilator had been unsuccessful.

TREATMENT AT KINDRED

Once his sedation was reduced, Nelson began ventilator weaning and active rehabilitation. He received physical, occupational, and speech therapy to rebuild his strength, mobility, self-care skills, and swallowing function. As his condition improved, he was successfully weaned from the ventilator, had his tracheostomy removed, returned to a regular diet, and made steady functional gains. Throughout his recovery, his wife and children provided encouragement and support.

OUTCOME

After 65 days, Nelson progressed from requiring total assistance to walking, climbing stairs, independently managing daily activities, and returning home with home health services.
