Teofilo's Story of Vent Liberation and Rehab

When Teofilo arrived at Kindred Hospital Chicago - North, he required full ventilator support. After working with his interdisciplinary care team, he was able to discharge to home with home health assistance.

A Patient Success Story from Kindred Hospital Chicago - North

Teofilo arrived at the local hospital’s emergency department with severe abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, generalized weakness, and shortness of breath. An abdominal CT scan showed free air in his abdomen, indicating bowel perforation. He was also found to be positive for COVID.

Teofilo was given broad-spectrum antibiotics, received a blood transfusion, and was immediately taken to the Operating Room (OR) to remove part of his small intestine. He remained intubated postoperatively but was returned to the OR the same day for re-exploration and another bowel resection. He was put on Total Parental Nutrition (intravenous feeding) for bowel rest. Further complications included bacteremia and septic shock, kidney failure requiring dialysis, and confusion due to metabolic encephalopathy. He was able to be weaned from low blood pressure medication, complete his IV antibiotic treatment, and receive nutrition through a feeding tube.

Teofilo was admitted to Kindred on full ventilator support. Initially, Teofilo required total assistance for mobility and self-care tasks. He was also often confused. His kidneys had recovered – through the expert care of the Nephrology and nutrition teams – to the point where he was able to stay off dialysis during his stay at KH Chicago North.

Respiratory continued their weaning protocol. Within one week, he was starting CPAP trials; within 10 days, he was weaning up to 24 hours off the vent; and finally, his trach was removed. Teofilo also progressed well with physical therapy, improving from bed mobility to walking. Once he was decannulated and could walk in the hallway, he really took off! He started walking more than 150 feet each attempt and could perform all his own self-care tasks, from bathing and dressing to managing his catheter. The wound care team worked with Teofilo and his son to help them manage daily dressing changes between home health visits.

Teofilo’s two sons were very supportive during his hospitalization and recovery. He has been discharged to his home with home health assistance.
