Fausto's Story of Recovery from Complex Medical Issues
When Fausto arrived at Kindred Hospital, he required a ventilator. After working with his interdisciplinary care team, he was able to discharge to an Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility.
A Patient Success Story from Kindred Hospital New Jersey - Morris County
Fausto was taken to a short-term acute care hospital with altered mental status due to severe alcohol withdrawal, requiring a transfer to intensive care. His heart stopped (asystole) for seven minutes before he was resuscitated. He was intubated but experienced emesis (vomiting) and developed aspiration pneumonia.
Fausto was transferred to Kindred Hospital New Jersey – Morris County on full ventilator support and dependent on others for all mobility. A PEG tube was feeding him but was inadequate to meet his needs.
Over 41 days of treatment at Kindred, Fausto improved significantly. He was weaned and eventually liberated from the vent, then successfully decannulated.
Fausto’s feeding via the tube also gradually increased to the point of fully meeting his nutritional needs. After speech therapy helped him regain his swallowing ability, Fausto was successfully transitioned off the tube to a puree diet with thin liquids.
At the time of discharge from Kindred, Fausto needed only low oxygen support via nasal cannula, he could stand with assistance, and he could accurately follow commands.
“The staff was absolutely amazing. They were basically family.”
Fausto transferred to an acute inpatient rehabilitation facility to continue his recovery. A husband and father of two daughters, Fausto looked forward to being back with his family and couldn’t wait to walk alone again.
