Thyrza's Success Story

Kindred Hospital Seattle patient Thyrza takes photo during recovery

Thyrza, a young woman battling a rare chronic condition, came to Kindred Hospital Seattle – First Hill after surgical complications led to respiratory failure. Despite facing severe infections and challenges weaning from the ventilator, Thyrza made a strong recovery with the help of a dedicated care team and ultimately regained her independence.

Thyrza is a young, vibrant woman who has had many medical complications due to a rare, chronic condition that causes inflammation throughout the body. Thyrza came to Kindred Hospital Seattle – First Hill after her abdominal procedure was complicated by acute respiratory failure requiring a tracheostomy (trach) placement, left thoracotomy, and lung decortication.

Her stay at Kindred was full of ups and downs including several intensive care unit (ICU) stays for severe sepsis with multiorgan failure requiring pressor support. Careful selection of antibiotics by our infectious disease specialist was required to clear Thyrza from her infection.

Thyrza struggled to wean from the ventilator. However, with persistence and a dedicated respiratory team, Thyrza eventually was weaned from the ventilator and regained her independence.

Care for Complex Conditions

Patients come to our hospitals with serious conditions such as respiratory failure, complex wounds, sepsis, stroke, congestive heart failure, or even a combination of these. Their diagnoses are often complicated by existing health problems like diabetes or COPD. Many of our patients require treatments such as mechanical ventilators, dialysis, or IV therapy.
