Vicki's Success Story
Vicki, who had a history of COPD, experienced a cardiac arrest, necessitating the use of a ventilator. After coming to Kindred, she was able to wean from the ventilator and regain mobility and independence, allowing her to transition to a lower level of care.
Vicki, a patient with a history of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and chronic pain syndrome, faced significant health challenges when she was admitted to a local hospital in San Antonio due to severe breathing difficulties. During her stay, her condition unexpectedly worsened, culminating in a cardiac arrest characterized by pulseless electrical activity (PEA). This critical event necessitated the use of a ventilator to support her breathing.
Despite the situation, Vicki displayed remarkable resilience throughout her recovery in the ICU. After several weeks of dedicated medical care, including stabilization and monitoring, the medical team decided it was time for her to transition to a higher level of specialized care. Vicki was transferred to Kindred Hospital San Antonio Central, where she would receive extended medical support focused on ventilator weaning and comprehensive rehabilitation.
Upon her admission to Kindred, the multidisciplinary care team thoroughly evaluated Vicki's medical history and current condition. They crafted a personalized care plan targeting crucial goals, primarily aimed at successfully weaning her off the ventilator while fostering her strength and independence. The plan included an integrative approach to her recovery through physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy, addressing all aspects of her well-being.
Initially, Vicki required total assistance with self-care and activities of daily living (ADLs). However, with the patientcentered focus of the Long-Term Acute Care (LTAC) facility and the dedication of her care team, she began her rehabilitation journey. Key to her progress was a tailored respiratory therapy program that supported her gradual weaning from the ventilator under the expert guidance of respiratory therapists.
Through hard work and perseverance, Vicki successfully transitioned off the ventilator during her time at Kindred, marking a significant milestone in her recovery. Her progress not only inspired her care team but also motivated fellow patients. Over the course of her treatment, Vicki achieved remarkable advancements, including increased independence in self-care tasks, improved respiratory function, and enhanced mobility. Ultimately, Vicki met all the goals set forth in her care plan, enabling her to transition to a lower level of care for additional rehabilitation and strength training. The Kindred care team sends their heartfelt wishes to Vicki for ongoing success in her recovery
