Angelo's Success Story
Doctors indicated that Angelo would likely not survive after he was diagnosed with a critical case of the flu. After receiving advanced life support, he was transferred to Kindred where he was treated for ventilator dependence, necrotic extremities, and a persistent fever. He required chest tubes, IV sedation, hemodialysis, and a PEG (feeding) tube. At the time of discharge, he was able to breathe, eat, and move independently.
In early February, Angelo thought he was just coming down with a simple cold. But after having to leave work early due to worsening symptoms, he realized it was something much more serious.
He was admitted to the hospital and was intubated and placed on a ventilator to help him breathe. Doctors indicated that Angelo was critically ill from Influenza, and there was a high probability that he might not survive.
As his condition worsened, Angelo had to be transferred to another hospital to receive advanced life support, including ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation), CRRT (continuous renal replacement therapy), and vasopressors. After several weeks of intensive care, his heart finally stabilized, and he was cleared to be transferred to a long-term acute care hospital (LTACH) for further recovery and ventilator weaning.
Given four facility options, Angelo chose to travel 70 miles to Kindred Hospital Lima after hearing numerous positive reviews and patient success stories.
Angelo was admitted to Kindred Hospital Lima in March and arrived still critically ill, with a tracheostomy, ventilator dependence, necrotic extremities, chest tubes, IV sedation, hemodialysis, a PEG tube, and a persistent fever. He was also completely bedbound. During his recovery, he ultimately required a left foot amputation.
But Angelo’s story is one of resilience. By the time of discharge, his chest tubes had been removed, he was successfully weaned off the ventilator, no longer needed dialysis or IV sedation, was free of infection, eating a regular diet, and actively participating in physical therapy.
