Rigoberto, a former military Reservist who loves to play Pokémon GO and spend time with his dog, came to Kindred Hospital – New Jersey Morris County after three days of abdominal pain and diarrhea. He also had a chronic left foot wound. Upon admission, Rigoberto needed maximum assistance for bed mobility and edge-of-bed sitting. He was dependent for all activities of daily living (ADLs). Gilbert suffered a sudden respiratory arrest at home that led to cardiac arrest. Fortunately, he was resuscitated at CommonSpirit St. Anthony Hospital, where he was also intubated and placed on a ventilator, treated with IV antibiotics for pneumonia and other infections, and received a feeding tube.

Charles had a normal, active life until, years ago, he was unexpectedly assaulted at a bus stop. He sustained a cervical spine injury secondary to the assault, resulting in paraplegia. When Dominic arrived at Kindred Hospital New Jersey – Morris County, he was already exhausted from a long and complicated medical battle. What began as flu A and pneumonia at Pocono Medical Center quickly escalated. After a brief discharge home, he returned within a week in severe respiratory distress. Dominic’s condition deteriorated into atrial fibrillation with rapid ventricular response, congestive heart failure, recurrent pneumonia, and worsening hypoxia requiring high flow oxygen and steroid therapy. By the time he transferred to Kindred, he was facing acute hypoxic respiratory failure on top of chronic lung disease. Before this illness, Dominic lived independently on 6 liters of oxygen; now, even minimal movement left him breathless.

A 62-year-old wife and mother of three who loves to be active and clean her house, Bertha had her health and well-being seriously threatened when she was admitted to University Medical Center of El Paso with respiratory failure that required placement on a ventilator. Bertha also had a sepsis infection that was thought to have been caused by pneumonia. David, 43, was taken to the emergency room after being found down at home. His medical workup revealed several issues and a CT scan showed David suffered a stroke and brain swelling. While recovering at a rehab facility, Henry suffered a traumatic brain hemorrhage with bleeding on both sides of the brain, and he began having seizures. He was taken to a hospital where he was diagnosed with pneumonia and low blood pressure and had wounds on his lower back and feet. Henry was transferred to Kindred Hospital Sugar Land for specialized long-term acute care and rehabilitation. During a 35-day stay, he received respiratory therapy and breathing treatments; physical, occupational, and speech therapy; and antibiotic therapy.
