Damien's Success Story

Kindred Hospital Chicago North patient Damien poses with his caregiver

Damien was admitted to the hospital with an infected wound on his foot.  After a toe amputation, he was transferred to Kindred Hospital for continued wound care and rehabilitation.  Damien made tremendous strides in healing and mobility and was deemed ready for discharge to home with home health.

Damien was admitted to the hospital with shortness of breath and chest pain There, it was discovered that his heart was slightly enlarged, and he was also septic from an infected right foot wound and abscess. Treatment required amputation, debridement, and antibiotic treatment.  He was transferred to Kindred Hospital Chicago North for continued wound care and rehabilitation.

When Damien arrived at Kindred, he was treated by an advanced wound care team that made sure his skin stayed healthy and his wound healed quickly.  Upon admission, he was unable to move around in bed by himself and could not stand or take any steps.  However, as Damien’s wounds healed, he was able to increasingly participate in physical and occupational therapy.  Five days per week, he worked with a physical therapist to regain strength, endurance, and mobility.  Four days per week, he participated in occupational therapy to help develop his coordination and self-care skills.  He learned adaptive strategies to make reaching and balance easier while his right foot was still healing.

In less than a month, he could move from the bed to a chair independently and even started walking.  After successfully climbing stairs, it was clear that he was ready to return home.

Damien was discharged home with home health.  From all of us at Kindred, we’re proud of your progress, Damien! Way to go!
