David's Success Story
After undergoing triple bypass surgery for his heart, David developed pneumonia and COVID-19. He was transferred to Kindred Hospital with a tracheostomy tube, ventilator, and feeding tube. At Kindred, David's care team got to work liberating him from the ventilator, and helping him move and eat on his own again. Within a week, he was up and moving around and was soo discharged home.
One afternoon, David took a nap before he needed to leave for work. When he woke up, he thought he was experiencing heartburn, however, his wife, Cheryl, thought something looked off. After a trip to the ER, doctors found multiple blockages in his coronary arteries, and he would need to have triple bypass surgery. The morning of the surgery, a valve in his heart ruptured. He was immediately intubated and transferred to a large hospital by Life Flight. His family was told he had a 50/50 chance of surviving.
Once he arrived, he had a triple bypass, an aortic transplant and a mechanical valve placement. The surgeries went well, but a few weeks later, David developed aspiration pneumonia and COVID-19. His care team decided it was time to transfer David to Kindred Hospital for specialized care and rehabilitation.
David arrived at Kindred in a mobile ICU, with a tracheostomy tube, ventilator, and feeding tube. There, he required a blood transfusion due to the bleeding from his trach placement and the blood thinners he was taking. He was confused and bedbound.
David’s physicians and respiratory therapists got to work liberating him from the ventilator. Meanwhile, his team of physical and occupational therapists began working with him to regain mobility. Speech therapists and nutritionists worked together to help him eat food again. Within a week, he was up and moving around.
By the time David was discharged home, he had been weaned from the ventilator, his trach was removed, he was eating meals again, and he could walk on his own.
