Edward's Success Story

Kindred Hospital San Francisco Bay Area patient Edward celebrates his successful patient journey

Edward was admitted for ventilator weaning and rehab after respiratory failure and a brain hemorrhage, and with interdisciplinary support, he progressed to walking over 1000 feet, breathing independently, speaking, and eating a modified diet while continuing cognitive therapy.

A Patient Success Story From Kindred Hospital San Francisco Bay Area

Edward was transferred to Kindred San Francisco Bay Area for mechanical ventilation, tracheostomy weaning, and rehabilitation.  Edward suffered from respiratory failure complicated by intracranial hemorrhage. His hospital course was prolonged due to poor endurance, agitation, and medical instability. He was unable to communicate his needs and he required tube feedings for nutrition. He presented with generalized muscle weakness and needed assistance for all mobility. His cognitive and functional abilities were severely compromised, requiring constant supervision for safety.  Under the guidance of our interdisciplinary team, Edward made remarkable progress. He ambulated more than 1000 feet with physical therapy and negotiated one flight of stairs. He was also weaned off his tracheostomy and remained on room air. His voice was intact, he tolerated a modified diet and he continued to work aggressively with speech therapy for cognitive therapy.
