Joseph's Success Story

Kindred Hospital San Francisco Bay Area patient Joseph stands with his caregiver

After experiencing respiratory failure and pneumonia, Joseph was admitted to Kindred Hospital for ventilator weaning and rehabilitation.  With the support of his care team, he regained mobility, speech, and the ability to eat, ultimately returning home on room air.

Joseph was transferred to Kindred Hospital San Francisco Bay Area for tracheostomy weaning, respiratory management, and rehabilitation.  Joseph suffered from pneumonia which ultimately caused respiratory failure. He required a trach collar during the day and a ventilator at night. He was unable to communicate his needs and he required tube feedings for nutrition. He presented with generalized muscle weakness and needed assistance for all mobility.  Under the guidance of our interdisciplinary team, Joseph made remarkable progress. He ambulated using a single-point cane, 500 feet with therapy and negotiated one flight of stairs.  Once weaned off the tracheostomy, he remained on room air, his voice was intact and he tolerated a regular diet.  After making remarkable strides, Joseph was discharged home.

Care for Complex Conditions

Patients come to our hospitals with serious conditions such as respiratory failure, complex wounds, sepsis, stroke, congestive heart failure, or even a combination of these. Their diagnoses are often complicated by existing health problems like diabetes or COPD. Many of our patients require treatments such as mechanical ventilators, dialysis, or IV therapy.
