Michael's Success Story

Kindred Hospital San Francisco Bay Area patient Michael celebrates his successful patient journey with a wave goodbye as he leaves the hospital in his truck

Michael came to Kindred Hospital San Francisco Bay Area with acute kidney failure requiring dialysis and a feeding tube.  With unwavering determination and the help of his care team, he began to heal, regain his mobility, and eat without a feeding tube.

Michael was transferred to Kindred Hospital San Francisco Bay Area for acute kidney failure post ECMO and mechanical ventilation.

His hospital course was prolonged due to hemodialysis, poor endurance and unstable vitals. He was able to eat a modified diet, however he continued to require N-G tube feedings for nutrition. He was dependent on routine nursing care for positioning and frequent turning and was non-ambulatory at the time of admission.

Under the guidance of our interdisciplinary team, Michael made remarkable progress. He ambulated more than 300 feet without an assistive device during physical therapy and negotiated three flights of stairs. Michael’s feeding tube was removed, and he tolerated a diet advancement. Michael was discharged home with the support of his family and home health services.

Care for Complex Conditions

Patients come to our hospitals with serious conditions such as respiratory failure, complex wounds, sepsis, stroke, congestive heart failure, or even a combination of these. Their diagnoses are often complicated by existing health problems like diabetes or COPD. Many of our patients require treatments such as mechanical ventilators, dialysis, or IV therapy.
