Odessa's Success Story
"The people here, the staff – everyone was very kind and helpful. I don’t think you could find a better hospital." After a complex heart surgery to treat blocked arteries, Odessa faced several serious health challenges. To support her recovery, she was placed on a ventilator and a feeding tube. At Kindred, an interdisciplinary care team helped her breathe on her own again, improve kidney function, and begin the healing process
After a complex heart surgery to treat blocked arteries, Odessa faced several serious health challenges, including pneumonia, sepsis, confusion, and kidney problems. She was also diagnosed with anemia and a blood clot in her lungs. To support her recovery, she was placed on a ventilator and a feeding tube.
Once her condition became more stable, Odessa was transferred to Kindred Hospital North Florida for specialized care. When she arrived, she had both a breathing tube (tracheostomy) and a feeding tube, needed dialysis for her kidneys, and was on medication for high blood pressure.
A team of doctors, nurses, and therapists worked together to create a personalized treatment plan focused on helping her breathe on her own again, improve kidney function, and begin the healing process. Once she no longer needed the ventilator, Odessa was ready for the next step: rehabilitation in the hospital’s Acute Rehab Unit.
At first, she needed a lot of help with basic tasks like getting out of bed or moving to a chair. But Odessa worked hard in her daily physical, occupational, and speech therapy sessions. She started standing with help and soon took her first steps.
Over time, Odessa made great progress. She was eventually able to do many everyday tasks with only a little help and walked 10 feet with a walker and some assistance. Thanks to her determination and the strong support of her loving family, she was able to go home.
