Yvonne's Success Story

Kindred Hospital San Antonio patient Yvonne stands with her care team

Yvonne required mechanical ventilation after experiencing respiratory failure, sepsis, and a stroke.  At Kindred Hospital, she began to breathe, walk, and complete self-care tasks without assistance.

Yvonne’s journey toward recovery began with her admission to a local hospital in the San Antonio area due to acute respiratory failure. Her situation quickly escalated as she contracted sepsis and suffered an ischemic stroke, necessitating the use of a ventilator to support her breathing. For several weeks, Yvonne remained bedbound, reliant on hospital staff for all aspects of self-care, which added to the emotional challenge of her situation.

As Yvonne's health began to stabilize, the medical team recognized the need for more specialized care to address the complexities of her condition. A decision was made to transfer her to Kindred Hospital San Antonio, where the focus would shift to ventilator weaning and restorative rehabilitation. This new phase of care aimed to improve her respiratory function and assist in regaining her independence through physical therapy and occupational therapy.

Upon arrival at Kindred Hospital, Yvonne required total assistance for mobility and self-care activities. The interdisciplinary team, well-versed in her medical history, developed a comprehensive care plan tailored specifically to her needs. Central to this was a ventilator weaning protocol designed to gradually reduce her dependence on the machine, allowing her body to reclaim its breathing capabilities.

Restorative rehabilitation became a foundation of Yvonne’s recovery. The physical therapists worked diligently with her to enhance her strength and mobility, gradually introducing exercises that would support her ability to stand and walk. Occupational therapists focused on activities of daily living (ADLs), helping Yvonne regain skills such as bathing, dressing, and managing daily personal care. These sessions were vital in rebuilding her confidence and independence.

As the weeks progressed, significant milestones were achieved. Yvonne successfully weaned off the ventilator, marking a pivotal moment in her recovery journey. She began to ambulate more effectively, eventually walking over 300 feet with the aid of a rolling walker. Each step forward symbolized her resilience and determination. Yvonne’s hard work and dedication to her rehabilitation paid off as she achieved all her care plan goals. With her health restored, she was discharged to her home with home health services to continue her progress. The care team at Kindred sends our best wishes for a successful recovery.

Care for Complex Conditions

Patients come to our hospitals with serious conditions such as respiratory failure, complex wounds, sepsis, stroke, congestive heart failure, or even a combination of these. Their diagnoses are often complicated by existing health problems like diabetes or COPD. Many of our patients require treatments such as mechanical ventilators, dialysis, or IV therapy.
