Cynthia's Success Story
Cynthia was on a cruise when she developed the flu and pneumonia, leading to respiratory failure. Once her condition stabilized, she was transferred to Kindred Hospital for ventilator weaning and rehabilitation.
Cynthia was enjoying herself on a cruise when she developed the flu and pneumonia and subsequently went into respiratory failure, requiring intubation with mechanical ventilation. Her care team placed a breathing tube and transferred her to Kindred Hospital Melbourne.
When she arrived at Kindred, the primary care focus was to help her come off the ventilator. Her respiratory therapist worked hard with her to slowly strengthen her lungs return to breathing room air.
While she was still on a ventilator, she started physical, occupational, and speech therapy. Although she could only tolerate sitting at the edge of the bed for five minutes initially, she was up walking with a walker in less than two weeks.
After successfully coming off the ventilator, her speech therapist and dietitian helped her return to a normal diet.
When Cynthia discharged, she was able to walk over 150 feet with a rollator walker and working on climbing. Cynthia transferred to the Kindred Hospital Melbourne Acute Rehabilitation Unit to continue her recovery before returning home.
